The News, Eats & Events Shaping Western New York |
Governor Kathy Hochul has launched a bold initiative to spread the excitement of the 2026 FIFA World Cup across New York State, awarding more than $371,000 to community projects in seven regions through the New York State Community World Cup Grant Program.
Buffalo, Binghamton, Albany, Troy, Syracuse, Rochester, Amsterdam, and others are set to host public viewing events and festivals, with grants empowering local organizations to bring residents and visitors together for the global soccer celebration.
This funding aims to boost local economies by increasing foot traffic to restaurants, shops, and small businesses during World Cup matches.
The $500,000 grant program supports watch parties and community festivals, while the new "NY Kicks" initiative will expand youth soccer access in underserved communities.
These efforts reflect New York's commitment to making the World Cup a statewide affair and ensuring every community shares in its energy and economic rewards. Read More... |

The Buffalo Sabres’ NHL playoff run has energized fans across Western New York, sparking a remarkable increase in local blood donations.
ConnectLife, the region’s community blood bank, is offering donors a chance to win coveted 200-level tickets to every Sabres home playoff game this April.
Enthusiasm is soaring, with appointment numbers more than doubling — 174 people signed up to give blood in a single day, far surpassing the typical 60 to 70.
This surge comes at a vital moment, as spring break and the approach of summer usually lead to fewer donations.
Blood collected through ConnectLife stays local, directly helping area hospitals and saving lives in the community.
Donors in April also receive a special t-shirt celebrating their support.
Donate, cheer for your Sabres, and make a meaningful difference in Western New York. Read More... |
